Allen Asher

Allen Levi Asher, age 81, passed away peacefully on March 2, 2012 in Phoenix, AZ. Allen was born to Archie and Lois Asher on September 10, 1930 in Atchison, KS. Allen grew up in Effingham, KS and upon graduation joined the Navy in 1948 and was trained as a laboratory technician. After the Navy Allen attended the University of Kansas which began his life long love affair with anything Jayhawk. Allen met the beautiful co-ed Doris Ann Wood on a blind date and they were married on June 6, 1954 in Danforth Chapel on the KU campus. Steve Allen was born on May 29, 1955 and upon graduating from KU in 1956 with a degree in pharmacy, Allen, Ann and Steve moved to Coffeyville, KS to begin Allen"s pharmacy career. Craig Eugene was born on November 9, 1957. A new job offer came from Messer Drugs in Paola, KS and the Asher"s moved to Paola in 1958. Scott Wood was born February 4, 1961 to complete the Asher family. Allen purchased Nicholson Drug Store later in 1961 and then moved to a new building in 1965 which was the beginning of Asher Pharmacy. After 33 years of business on Paola town square, Allen sold Asher Pharmacy and retired in 1994. Retirement didn"t mean giving up what he loved to do as Allen continued to work as a pharmacist until he was 80. Allen served his community in numerous ways including his church, Paola Methodist Church, as a member of the Shriners, Lion"s Club member and Paola School board member and President. Allen was preceded in death by his parents, Archie and Lois Asher, his sister Helen Uhlig, his brother-in-law Robert Uhlig, father and mother-in-law Russell and Lou Gene Wood and sister-in-law Linda Lou Hawk. Allen is survived by his wife, Ann Asher, son Steve Asher, wife Beth and children Justin and Brendan, son Craig Asher and children Dani and Nathan, son Scott Asher, wife Janice and children Adam and Emily. He is also survived by his brother Kenneth, wife Mary and children Chalen, Kenna, Danielle and Jerry, nephew Lee Uhlig, niece Jane Stotts and nephew Ted Uhlig, brother-in-law Jerry Hawk and children Russell, Mitchell and Michael. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Paola United Methodist Church or to the University of Kansas School of Pharmacy.
