Alfred L. "Al" Geiger

Alfred L. “Al” Geiger, 79, passed away Tuesday, February 21, 2017, at his home in Ottawa, with his family by his side. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M., Monday, February 27, 2017, at the First Christian Church, Ottawa. Family will meet with friends one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment Highland Cemetery with Masonic and military services. Reception will follow at the church after the burial. Al was born June 1, 1937, in Paola, Kansas, the son of Lee Arthur and Mary (McKenzie) Geiger. He grew up and attended school in Paola, raised by his paternal grandmother. Al moved to Overland Park, Kansas, where he lived 30 years. In 1997, Al moved to Ottawa, and during his retirement he and Karen resided in Florida during the winter. Al was united in marriage to Karen Ann Doudna February 13, 1960, in Miami, Oklahoma. She survives of the home. Other survivors include his two sons, Randy Geiger and Shari Eichenberger of Ottawa, and Doug Geiger and wife Karelyn of Liberty, Missouri; two grandchildren, Jacie Kelley and husband Luke of Kimball, Nebraska, and Logan Geiger of Lincoln, Nebraska; and two great-grandchildren, Aiden Kelley and Isabelle Kelley both of Kimball, Nebraska. He was preceded in death by his father, Lee Geiger; mother, Mary Fultz; and sister, Virginia Robinson. Al served his country in the United States Army from July 1960 to July 1962. He obtained the rank of private first class and received the good conduct medal. He began his work career at the young age of fourteen, where he helped construct grain elevators nationwide. He also had his own residential and commercial fencing company. He was employed with American Cast Iron Pipe Company in Merriam, as a lead supervisor in shipping and receiving for 35 years, retiring in 1997. Al was a member and past master of Rosedale Masonic Lodge 333 of Merriam; 32nd degree Mason of the northeast Scottish Rite Temple of Prairie Village; Abdallah Shrine Temple of Overland Park; and Beatrice Chapter 450, Order of the Eastern Star of Shawnee. He enjoyed western TV and books, coin collecting, playing cards, collecting and selling antiques, and had a special interest in the stock market. Al was known for having a large vegetable garden, specializing in tomatoes. He enjoyed traveling, hunting, fishing, camping across the U.S. and spending time at his cabin on Lake of the Ozarks.
