Agnes Carter

Mary "Agnes" Mildred Carter, 92 of Paola, Kansas passed away October 2, 2010 at North Point Nursing Center in Paola. Agnes was born March 18, 1918 to Elmer Winfield and Josanna Sara Short Wyndt in Croweburg, Kansas. After the death of her parents, she was raised by her Dad"s sister, Ida and then her aunt Nora and Uncle Jack. Agnes grew up around the Pleasanton, Paola, and Fontana area; attending school at Paola and at Fontana High School. On March 2, 1937 she was united in marriage to Talmadge Earl Carter; they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1987. They lived in Colville, Washington in the early years and became the parents of three children; Joseph Burnett Carter, Elmer Earl Carter, and Judy Mae Carter. While in Washington, Agnes worked in a cannery; later she worked for a dime store in Fort Scott, although she was mainly a homemaker. Agnes and Earl moved to Kansas in approximately 1943 when they both worked for a while at Sunflower Ammunition plant. They later lived in Pleasanton, Fort Scott, Paola, and then Fontana where she lived from 1968-2010. She loved to crochet and was well known for her talent with that. She also raised a big garden and loved her flowers. She is preceded in death by her parents; husband; a son, Elmer in 2004; her daughter, Judy in 2006; and a sister, Thelma Claudine Wyndt Bright; and the aunts who raised her, Ida and Nora. She is survived by her son, Joseph Carter and wife Barbery of Fresno, CA; daughter-in-law, Darline Carter of Fontana, KS (who was her full-time caregiver after her daughter Judy passed away); son-in-law, Joe Vartan of Fontana, KS; three grandchildren, Janet Carter of Paola, KS, Pam Carter of Paola, KS, and Elmer Carter Jr. of Fontana, KS; a niece, Marie Bright Arbogast of Foster, MO. She is also survived by her step-grandchildren; half-brother, Paul Howell; and half-sisters, Juanita and Shirley. She will be dearly missed by her family.
