A. D. Metcalf, 79, of Paola, passed peacefully into God"s care at his home with his wife and family by his side on August 20. 2011. One of 9 children, A.D. was born August 6, 1932 in Crane, MO to Ray and Thena (Gipson) Metcalf. A.D. was united in marriage to Lois Dahnke of Granby, MO on November 24, 1955. They were the proud parents of two children. A.D. began his barbering career in Overland Park in 1955 having established two barber shops, the Overland Park Barber Shop and Santa Fe Trail Barber Shop. In 1962 he moved his family to rural Richland Township in Miami County where he raised Angus cattle and established yet another barber shop, A.D."s Barber Shop, which he operated until his retirement in 1998. As anyone who spent time in the barber shop quickly learned, A.D. loved to fish and hunt and this passion has been passed on to his children. He was a longtime member of the Paola United Methodist Church, a 54 year member of the American Legion Post 156 of Paola, having served with the United States Navy during the Korean Conflict aboard the USS Burdo (APD-133). He was a member of the Overland Park Lions Club where one of his duties was to recruit an individual to fill the roll of Santa Claus, where he was woefully unsuccessful, therefore, he himself was unanimously chosen by his peers to stand in for Santa. His 140 pound, slim build, needed 100 pounds of feather padding to fill out the red suit. Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 56 years, Lois, of the home, son, Bill Metcalf (Jayne) of Rockdale, TX, and daughter, Cheryl Ladd (Donn) of Lincoln, NE; four grand- children, Taryne Ladd-Walk (Dan) of Annandale, VA, Paul Ladd (Sara) of Lincoln, NE, Serina Ladd of Chicago, IL and Jennifer Metcalf of Houston, TX; four great-grandchildren, Foster and Loghen Walk and Alexa and Parker Ladd; two special sisters-in-law, Sherry Perkins of Granby, MO and Anita Reed (David) of Neosho, MO; brother, Richard Metcalf (Marie), of Marionville, MO a special cousin, Noveta Garner of Crane, MO and numerous nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death were his parents, two sisters and five brothers. The family wishes to extend their love and gratitude to the many physicians and support staff of the Olathe Medical Center. Memorials are suggested to the Hospice of Olathe Medical Center or charity of choice in care of the funeral home.
