Thomas E. "Tom" Carey

Thomas Edward Carey was born Sunday, January 25, 1925, in Ottawa, Kansas. He was the son of Clifford and Odessa (Dial) Carey. Raised in Franklin County, Tom lived in the Richmond area and graduated from Richmond High School with the class of 1942. He then moved to Lawrence and later the Leavenworth County area, where he lived for more than fifty years. In 2008, he moved to Ottawa and made his home until his death on Sunday, August 3, 2014, at the age of eighty-nine years. Tom served in the United States Army, from 1949 to 1950, at Fort Bliss and Fort Riley. Tom was united in marriage with Delma Lee Herbert July 20, 1952, at Camdenton, Missouri. She preceded him in death July 31, 1978. He married Joyce Eagles in 1980 at Leavenworth, Kansas. She also preceded him in death May 7, 2007. He was also preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Mildred Carey and Dorothy Cooper; sister-in-law, Phyllis Herbert; and brother-in-law, Bob Cooper. Survivors include his two children, Deborah Carey-Longtin and husband Jeff of Hinesville, Georgia and Steve Carey of Ottawa; three step-children, Sandy Lennon and husband Tom of Florida, Melony Aull and husband Alex of Lansing and Mark Peters of Leavenworth; three grandchildren, including Ryan Dodd and wife Joyce of Nortonville; five great grandchildren, including Mason Dodd; brother-in-law, Mike Herbert and wife Jane of Camdenton, Missouri; and ten nieces and nephews. Tom worked for the Post Office as a mail carrier, from 1968 until retiring in 1990. He previously worked at Meyer Dairy in Basehor from 1961 to 1968; Manor Bread in Leavenworth from 1958 to 1961; and Hercules Powder Plant in De Soto from 1951 to 1957. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles #55 Leavenworth, Kansas. Tom was a kind and caring man who loved his family and enjoyed reminiscing about the past. He will be deeply missed and remain in the hearts and thoughts of his family and friends forever.
