Shirley A. Hughes, 83 of Wellsville, Kansas passed away Tuesday, February 25, 2014 at Olathe Medical Center. Cremation is planned by Dengel & Son Mortuary, no services are planned. Shirley was born on Thursday, February 19, 1931 in Ottawa, Kansas, the daughter of Seth Edgar Whitacre and Juanita (Bryant) Whitacre-Eames. She lived in Wellsville most of her life. She graduated from Ottawa High School with the class of 1948. On May 3, 1948 Shirley was united in marriage with Stanley Clark Hughes in Baldwin, Kansas. He preceded her in death on March 22, 1978. Survivors include her five children, Steven Hughes, Craig Hughes, Sheri Watts, Susan Shields and husband Tim all of Wellsville, and Mark Hughes and companion Julie Wilson of Largo, Florida; eight grandchildren; and thirteen great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband; grandson, Kevin Watts; parents; step-father, Harrison Eames; and sister, Connie Coffey. Shirley was not only a wife and mother but owned and operated the Wellsville Tavern with her husband from 1966 to 1981. She was also a cook for the Wellsville Manor Nursing Home. She enjoyed the simple things in life; cheeseburgers, chocolate, going to Florida to see the dolphins, manatees and going to the beach.
