Shirley A. Hile, 67, of Ottawa, Kansas passed away Monday, August 11, 2014, at Ottawa Retirement Village surrounded by family. Cremation is planned. Family will meet with friends from 7:00 to 8:00 P.M., Friday, August 15, 2014, at Dengel & Son Mortuary. Shirley was born Monday, September 23, 1946, in Garnett, Kansas, the daughter of Vernard B. and Evalena (Johnson) Bell. She graduated from Garnett High School and continued her education at Emporia State University. She was a lifelong Kansas resident, moving from Garnett to Ottawa after finishing school. Shirley was united in marriage with William R. Hile February 17, 1973, at Garnett. He survives of the home. Survivors include her daughter, Debi (Hile) Hedtke and husband Joe of Scranton, Kansas; and grandson, Wyatt Hedtke also of Scranton. She was preceded in death by her parents. Shirley worked for H. D. Lee in Ottawa, and later transferred to the V. F. Corporation Headquarters in Merriam, Kansas where she retired. She later went to work part-time for Precision Cut in Shawnee, Kansas. She was a member of the Ottawa Eagles 2700 Auxiliary where she served as president and treasurer, and Veterans of Foreign Wars 5901 Auxiliary. Shirley was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother, whose greatest joy was spending time with her family. She also enjoyed music, playing guitar and singing, bowling in leagues and tournaments, and painting. She was an avid fan of science fiction and true crime novels, as well as television, and was well known for her love of cats and cat memorabilia. The family suggests memorial contributions to F.O.E.
