Roberta M. Hughes

Roberta M. Hughes, 88, of Augusta, Kansas, formerly of Ottawa, Kansas, passed away Tuesday, May 12, 2020. Private graveside services will be held at Highland Cemetery, Ottawa. Mrs. Hughes will lie in state from 10:00 A.M. to 12:00 P.M. on Saturday, May 16, 2020, at Dengel & Son Mortuary where family and friends may pay their respects staying in compliance with COVID-19 restrictions. Roberta was born September 8, 1931 at Neosho Rapids, Kansas, the daughter of Earl and Delma (McMillin) Ware. She lived many years in Williamsburg and Ottawa, Kansas before moving to Augusta, Kansas in 1991. She graduated from Williamsburg High School and from Ottawa University and Emporia State University. Roberta was united in marriage to Lloyd B. Hughes April 5, 1953 at Ottawa, Kansas. He preceded her in death on January 13, 1990. She was also preceded in death by her parents, Earl and Delma Ware and brother, James Ware. Survivors include her daughters, Deborah M. Scheck and husband Richard of Roeland Park, Kansas, Jeanette E. Ard and husband Bruce of Great Bend, Kansas; brother, Jon Ware and wife Rosemary of Topeka, Kansas; sister-in-law, Dorothy Ware of Augusta, Kansas; 6 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, 2 great-great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. Roberta worked for Ottawa USD 290 and West Franklin USD 287 as a teacher and librarian, retiring in the 1990’s. She was a member of Alpha Delta Kappa sorority and First Baptist Church in Ottawa, Kansas.
