Paul "Ed" Garber

Paul Edward “Ed” Garber, 75, of Overbrook, Kansas passed away Tuesday, August 6, 2013 at Brookside Retirement Community. Funeral Mass will be held at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Ottawa, 10:00 A.M. Friday, August 9, 2013. A Rosary will be said at 6:30 P.M. Thursday, August 8, 2013 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, followed by a family and friends visitation at 7:00 P.M. Interment Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Ottawa, Kansas. Ed was born on Monday, February 21, 1938 in Pomona, Kansas. He was the son of Paul A. and Ivie (Sailor) Garber, they divorced and he was raised by his mother and Max Hetrick. He lived in Centropolis, Kansas from 1964 to 2010, then moved to Overbrook. He attended schools in Arkansas, western and central Kansas. He graduated from Appanoose High School with the class of 1956. He attended a telegraph school in Colorado and worked for the railroad. On April 11, 1964 Ed was united in marriage with Mary Scott in Ottawa, Kansas. She survives of their home after forty-nine years of marriage. Other survivors include his two daughters, Sheri Gloss and husband Kevin of Overbrook; Toni Goins and husband Todd of Auburn, Washington; two grandsons, Dallas and Weston Gloss; sister, Lois Ikenberry and husband Ike of Montgomery, Alabama; brother, Leslie Garber and wife Shannon of Garnett; brother-in-laws, Ralph Hamilton of Pomona and Rex Gilliland of Overbrook; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Paul Garber; parents, Ivie and Max Hetrick; two sisters, Faye Gilliland and Della Hamilton; and brother, Jim Garber. Ed worked for the Pomona Lumber Yard in the early 1960’s and Cotton Burgoon, a local builder from 1964 to 1968, where he learned his carpentry skills and helped build the Ottawa and Overbrook Sale Barns. He then worked for K & M Floor Covering of Lawrence in the late 1960’s to mid 1970’s and then partnered with Calvin Gruver in the Baldwin Floor Covering business. He later was employed for twenty-eight years with Farmland Industries as a Senior Operator, retiring in 2001. He served in Germany with the United States Army from 1958 to 1960. Ed loved spending time with his grandsons and attending their activities. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and trapping and was always up for a game of cards. He was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church; former board member for USD #287; and the Appanoose Museum. He was loved by family members and will always have a special place in their hearts.
