Myrtle Elizabeth Brown

Myrtle Elizabeth Brown was born on Tuesday, January 30, 1917, in Franklin County, Kansas. She was the daughter of Joseph Oren and Dora Ethel (Drum) Crowley. A lifelong resident of Franklin County, Myrtle made her home in Ottawa, Kansas, until her death on Thursday, August 12, 2010, at the age of ninety-three years. She graduated from Williamsburg High School with the class of 1935. On July 16, 1942, Myrtle was united in marriage with Harry Davis Brown in Cheyenne, Wyoming. He preceded her in death August 29, 1978. Myrtle helped her husband, Harry, in their salvage yard business until about 1967, when she went to work as the receptionist at The Ottawa Herald newspaper, retiring in 1986. She was a member of First United Methodist Church and served as a volunteer for Ransom Memorial Hospital Auxiliary from 1991 until 2006, both of Ottawa. Myrtle was active all of her life, enjoyed traveling, and had a wonderful sense of humor. She was compassionate and generous with her time as a volunteer and loved spending time with her family and friends. She enjoyed caring for her yard and flowers, quilting, and creating embroidery items. She is survived by two sons, Barry Alan Brown and his wife, Nancy, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Larry Gene Brown of Wichita, Kansas; brother, Glen Crowley of Williamsburg, Kansas; three grandchildren, Amy Meyer and her husband, Phil, of Marion, Iowa, Rebecca Macanas and her husband, Randon, of Ft. Mill, South Carolina, Courtney Kiefer and her husband, Adam, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; two great-grandchildren, Andrew and Zachary Meyer; nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her brother, Louis Crowley, and sister, Edna Gier. SERVICES: Funeral services will be held from Dengel & Son Mortuary in Ottawa at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, August 16, 2010. IN STATE: Mrs. Brown will lie in state at Dengel & Son Mortuary from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. Saturday and 1:00 to 9:00 p.m. Sunday, where the family will meet with friends from 2:00 to 3:00 Sunday afternoon. CEMETERY: Highland Cemetery in Ottawa, Kansas. MEMORIALS: Memorial contributions may be made to Ransom Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, c/o Dengel & Son Mortuary, 235 S. Hickory, Ottawa, Kansas 66067.
