Melvin G. “Mel” Edmonds, Jr., age 68 of Ottawa, Kansas, died Friday, September 03, 2010. He was born on Tuesday, April 28, 1942 in Lawrence, KS the son of Melvin Edmonds and Ruth (Harper) Edmonds. He has lived in Ottawa, Kansas since 1999, moving from Lawrence, Kansas where he had lived for many years. He grew up and went to school in Vinland, Kansas. Melvin graduated from Vinland High School as valedictorian with the class of 1960. “Mel” worked in construction from 1963 to 2006. He spent many years as a contractor for residential and commercial construction and later owned and operated M. Edmonds Construction with his stepson Kevin Brewer, from the mid 1990’s to 2005. He spent many years as a contractor for residential construction. Melvin Served in the United States Navy from 1960 to 1963 as a navigator on a LSD water transfer patrol boat in the South Pacific. He attended Westminster Presbyterian Church; former member of Fraternal Order of Eagles Lawrence. On April 21, 1992, Melvin was united in marriage with Sandi Bundy-Brewer in Ottawa, Kansas. She survives of their home. He had been previously married to Janet Christian, They later divorced. He is survived by his: Wife-Sandi Edmonds of Ottawa, Kansas; Daughter-Denise Swain and her husband Jeff of Virginia; Daughter-Diona Burton and her husband Larry of Baldwin, Kansas; Son-Richard Edmonds and his fiancé Alicia of Baldwin, Kansas; Son-Ruben Edmonds and his fiancé Karen of Lawrence, Kansas; Stepson-Jeff Brewer and his wife Christina of Ottawa, Kansas; Stepson-Randy Brewer and his wife Valerie of Ottawa, Kansas; Stepson-Kevin Brewer and his wife Debbie of Ottawa, Kansas; Stepson-Chris Brewer and his wife Cyndi of Ottawa, Kansas; Brother-Dale Edmonds of Missouri; Brother-Mark Edmonds of Lawrence, Kansas; Brother-David Edmonds of Lawrence, Kansas; Sister-Betty Jo Hurlebrink (Hank) of Missouri; Sister-Pat Edmonds; Grandchildren-Twenty-one and Great Grandchildren-One. He was preceded in death by his: Sister-Sharon Christian; Brother-Larry Edmonds; Brother-Steven Edmonds and Brother-Russel Edmonds. VISITATAION: The family will meet with friends from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. Thursday evening at Dengel and Son Mortuary, Ottawa. SERVICES: Memorial Services will be held at the Dengel & Son Mortuary in Ottawa at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, September 10, 2010. CEMETERY: Inurnment Highland Cemetery in Ottawa, Kansas.
