Mary Joan Cook, 90, of Ottawa, KS, passed away Thursday, April 7, 2022, at Rock Creek of Ottawa. Family will meet with friends from 9:30 A.M. to 10:30 A.M., Wednesday, April 13, 2022, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Ottawa. Followed by a funeral Mass at 10:30 A.M. Interment Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Ottawa. Joan was born June 14, 1931, at Humboldt, KS, the daughter of Ralph J. and Regina A. (Eckart) Womack. She grew up in the Humboldt area and moved to Ottawa in 1956. She graduated from Humboldt High School with the class of 1949. Joan was united in marriage with Donald J. “Jim” Cook on January 19, 1960, at Lawrence, KS. He preceded her in death on October 27, 1999. She was also preceded in death by her parents, Ralph and Regina Womack and 7 brothers, Rev. Emil Womack, Rev. Warren Womack, Lawrence Womack, Paul Womack, Jim Womack, Bernard Womack and Dr. Charles Womack; 2 sisters, Yvonne Ohmes and Josephine Ketzner; and grandson James Soendker. Survivors include 2 daughters, Catherine (Don) Soendker of Topeka, KS and Mary (Rick) Schaut of St. Joseph, MI; 2 sons, Samuel (Connie) Wright of Lawrence, KS and William (Robin) Wright of Ottawa; 4 siblings, Bill Womack of Overland Park, KS, Phyllis Miller of Oklahoma City, OK, Bernadette Cimino of Junction City, KS, and Joe Womack of Chicago, IL; grandchildren, Pat Soendker, Jeff Soendker, Jessica Johnson, Sierra Wilson, Katie Deskovich, Maggie Smith, Carly Ridenour and Nicole Parshall and many great grandchildren. Joan was a devoted lifelong homemaker and member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and the Sacred Heart Altar Society, Franklin County Cancer Foundation, Ransom Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, and the Home Care Support Group, She enjoyed crafting, doing service work and church work. The family suggests memorial contributions to Franklin County Cancer Foundation or the Sacred Heart Altar Society c/o Dengel & Son Mortuary, 235 S. Hickory, Ottawa, KS 66067.
