Mary Frances Bullock was born on Monday, May 17, 1920, in Fort Scott, Kansas. She was the daughter of Earl H. and Minnie (Wooley) Baxter. In the early 1940’s, Mary moved from Fort Scott to Ottawa in Franklin County, Kansas, where she made her home until her death on Monday, February 7, 2011, at the age of ninety. Mary graduated from Fort Scott High School, Fort Scott Community College, and Ottawa University, with her Bachelor of Arts in education, in the 1940’s. She was a teacher. For a total of thirty years, she taught at several area schools, including high school in Wellsville and Lincoln Elementary in Ottawa. She completed her teaching career at Garfield Elementary in Ottawa in 1976. She was a deeply devoted, active member of First Baptist Church in Ottawa for over fifty years. She was also a member of P.E.O., Beta Gamma Sorority, Ottawa Retired Teachers’ Association, and Tot-to-´Teen. Mary also enjoyed visiting with her family and friends. In her spare time, she enjoyed reading. She also loved traveling, especially to Florida and Colorado. On Saturday, February 26, 1944, Mary was united in marriage with Neil Bernard Bullock in Fort Scott, Kansas. He survives at their home. She is also survived by her daughter, Nancy Jane Bennett of Ottawa, Kansas; sister, Carolyn Smithers, of Santa Maria, California; many nieces and nephews, including Hal Gordon of Florida, Charles Gordon of Florida, Mary Ruth Greene of Florida, Barbara Hugie of California, Bill Smithers of Wyoming, and Jean Geist of Ottawa, Kansas, as well as many great nieces and nephews. Mrs. Bullock is preceded in death by her parents and four sisters, Jeanette Baxter, Mildred McDuffee, Ruth Gordon, and Virginia Kohl. SERVICES: Funeral Services will be held at First Baptist Church in Ottawa at 2:00 P.M. on Saturday, February 12, 2011. IN STATE: Mrs. Bullock will lie in state at the Dengel & Son Mortuary in Ottawa from 9:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M. Friday, and 9:00 A.M. to noon Saturday. CEMETERY: Highland Cemetery in Ottawa, Kansas.
