Mary Alice Burgess

Mary Alice Burgess, 85, of Ottawa, Kansas, passed away Tuesday, May 12, 2015, at Ottawa Retirement Village. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, May 16, 2015, at Dengel & Son Mortuary. Friends may pay their respects to Mrs. Burgess from 1:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., Friday, May 15, 2015 at the mortuary. Interment Ruhamah Cemetery, Rantoul, Kansas. Mary was born Friday, August 9, 1929, in Ottawa, Kansas, the daughter of Carl Edward and Elizabeth (Strider) Bennett. She lived in Ransomville, Ottawa, Overland Park, Rantoul and Topeka, before returning to Ottawa in 2002. Mary attended rural Franklin County schools. She worked in food service; a short time at Ottawa University, three years at the L & L Café in Ottawa, Falley’s in Topeka from 1975 to 1981 in the bakery and Washburn University in the salad department, retiring in 1990. Mary was united in marriage with Claude A. Bloomer June 9, 1951, in Bristow, Oklahoma. He preceded her in death October 10, 1976. She married James H. Burgess November 13, 1977, in Homewood, Kansas. He preceded her in death April 10, 2002. She is also preceded in death by her parents; son, Stephen Bloomer; daughter, Janice Kay Bloomer; brother, Harold Bennett; and three sisters, Virginia Parry, Wilma Hay, and Mildred Barber. Survivors include her brother, Willard Bennett and wife Barbara of Hutchison, two sisters, Freda “Peggy” Williamson of Brooksville, Florida, and Eula Scott and husband John of Pomona; and many nieces and nephews.
