Luis M. Vega

Luis M. Vega, 95, passed away May 21, 2014, at his home in Ottawa, Kansas, with his family by his side. A rosary will be said at 6:30 P.M., Monday, May 26, 2014, at Dengel & Son Mortuary, followed by a family and friends visitation at 7:00 P.M. A funeral mass will be held at 10:00 A.M., Tuesday, May 27, 2014, at Sacred Heart Church. Interment Highland Cemetery, Ottawa. He was born on May 10, 1919, in Sahuayo, Michoacan Mexico, the son of Cresienso and Rosario (Garvez) Jiminez. Luis attended school in Sahuayo, Michoacan Mexico. He immigrated to the United States and was employed and retired with Santa Fe Railroad. Luis was united in marriage with Mary Madeline Cruces September 28, 1947, in Olathe, Kansas. She preceded him in death on July 23, 2008. Survivors include his three daughters, Rosalind Flores of El Centro, California; Patricia Shenk of Ottawa; and Sara Vega also of Ottawa; son, Richard Vega and wife Tina of Lawrence; brother-in-law, Richard Cruces and wife Alta of Ottawa; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary; son, Salvador Vega; daughter, Stella Jackson; his parents; brother, Jose Jimenez; sister, Maria Jimenez; two grandsons, Kevin Jackson, Jr. and Salvador Vega II; great-granddaughter, Kristen Vega; great-grandson, Alex Bowles-Gregg; and great-great-grandson, Anthony Flores, Jr. Luis was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He deeply loved his family and his favorite activities always centered on spending time with them. He enjoyed music, dancing, socializing with friends, neighbors and attending church. His specialty was working in his garden and growing grapes. He was a member and regularly attended Sacred Heart Church.
