John was born December 1, 1930 in Paola Kansas to John R. Sr. and Ethel Lottie Kern Courtney. He was a life long resident of Paola and on December 11, 1949 he was united in marriage to Barbara Frye in Paola. John worked at the Sunflower Army Ammunition Plant for 22years. Then he started his own plumbing business in Paola in 1973. He retired from his business in 1999. He had a knack for fixing about anything. He was a former Captain and Assistant Chief of the Paola volunteer fire department for 31 years. He enjoyed woodworking, gardening, working with his hands and loved spending time with his children and grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, and one grandson Shawn. Surviving is his wife Barbara of the home, two sons Ron of Osawatomie, Steve and wife Kathy of Paola, daughter, Terry of Paola, four brothers, Charles Courtney of Elbert Colorado, Bob Courtney, Roy Courtney both of Ottawa, Kansas , Wayne Courtney of Paola and two grandsons, Lance and his wife Megan of Gardner and Chris and his wife Tiffany Courtney of Paola.
