John Charles “J.C” Swallow Sr., 86, of Ottawa, Kansas, passed away Thursday, June 1, 2017 at his home. Memorial visitation will be held from 6:30 P.M. to 7:30 P.M., Tuesday, June 6, 2017 at Dengel & Son Mortuary. Inurnment will be held at Highland Cemetery, Ottawa, at a later date. J.C. was born Thursday, January 1, 1931, in Ottawa, Kansas, the son of John C. Sr. and Alice (Rice) Swallow. He was a lifelong Ottawa resident. J.C. graduated from Ottawa High School with the class of 1949. He was united in marriage with Margaret Magill on August 10, 1949 in El Paso, Texas. They later divorced. He later married Janice Smith on April 1, 1969 in Miami, Oklahoma. They also divorced. Survivors include his four children, Patricia McAninch and husband Rick of De Soto, Donna Lear and husband Jerry of Ottawa, John Swallow Jr. of Lawrence, and Mike Swallow and Gabie Dominiq of Garnett; two step-children, Eugene White and wife Becky of Baldwin City, and Jewell Gleason of Olathe; ten grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. J.C. was preceded in death by his parents, John Sr. and Alice Swallow; and brother, Marcus Swallow. He was self-employed as a truck driver and and hay hauler. J.C. owned and operated Swallow Saw Mill in Ottawa for many years. He also worked for Dodson International for 25 years, where he traveled the world retrieving airplanes and parts. He served in the United States Air Force. J.C. was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Ottawa, later attending First United Methodist Church. He enjoyed 3:00 P.M. coffee with friends, and working with the Ottawa Municipal Airport Club. As a child, he enjoyed playing with model airplanes. J.C. was very fond of his pet dog, Myla. He was known as a very social person and liked visiting with others.
