Grace J. Shaffer, age 66, of Vassar, Kansas, died Thursday, June 30, 2011 at Olathe Medical Center in Olathe, Kansas. She was born on Monday, September 25, 1944 in Ottawa, Kansas, the daughter of Manuel and Martha (House) Baldovino. Grace grew up in Ottawa, moving with her husband for his work in 1964 to St Louis, Missouri, and then lived in Little Rock, Arkansas, Kansas City, Missouri, Houston, Texas, and Omaha, Nebraska before moving to Vassar, Kansas in 2000. Grace graduated from Ottawa High School with the class of 1962. She was a homemaker. In the early 1980's Grace worked in a delicatessen in St. Louis, Missouri and in the late 1980's the department store, Richmond Gordman's in Omaha, Nebraska, in 2002 at Wal-Mart in Ottawa, and worked as a para-professional for USD 290 at Garfield Elementary School from 2001 until retiring in 2003. Grace was a member of First United Methodist Church in Ottawa and a former member of the Ottawa Country Club. On Saturday, January 4, 1964, Grace was united in marriage with Gary R. Shaffer at Lawrence, KS. He survives of their home. She is survived by her: Husband - Gary Shaffer, Vassar, KS; Son - Brad Shaffer, Springfield, MO; Son - Brian Shaffer, Ottawa, KS; Daughter - Lisa Halbur and her husband, Doug, Omaha, NE; Brother - Louis Baldovino and his wife, Kendra, Rogue River, OR; Sister - Linda Himel and her husband, Lester, Thibodaux, LA; Sister - Jeanne Garcia and her husband, Jimmy, Ottawa, KS; Sister - Patricia Baldovino, Green Bay, WI; Granddaughter - Victoria Halbur, Omaha, NE; Grandson - Lucas Halbur, Omaha, NE and Granddaughter - Cheyenne Shaffer, Glenwood, IA. Grace was preceded in death by her:Parents - Martha and Manuel Baldovino; Brother- Ernie Baldovino and Brother- Joseph Baldovino. SERVICES: Funeral services will be held from the First United Methodist Church of Ottawa 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, July 6, 2011. IN STATE: Mrs. Shaffer will lie in state at the Dengel & Son Mortuary after 9 a.m. Tuesday where the family will meet with friends Tuesday evening from 7 to 8. CEMETERY: Mt. Hope Cemetery, Williamsburg, Kansas. MEMORIALS: The family suggests memorial contributions to First United Methodist Church c/o Dengel & Son Mortuary, 235 S. Hickory, Ottawa, Kansas 66067.
