Gary N. Mavity, age 64, of Olathe, Kansas, died Monday, September 12, 2011, at his residence. He was born on Sunday, June 15, 1947, in Ottawa, Kansas, the son of Charles Mavity, Jr. and Delma (New) Mavity. He was a near lifelong Ottawa resident. He moved to Oxford, Kansas in 1997, and Olathe, Kansas in 2002. Gary graduated from Ottawa High School with the class of 1965 and Pittsburg State University in 1971. During a thirty-year career in the field of education, Gary served as a teacher, coach, assistant principal of Ottawa Junior High, principal of Erie High School and Ottawa High School and superintendent of Oxford Schools, Oxford, Kansas. After two years of semi-retirement, he returned to teach at Ottawa High. He served as a commissioned officer in the United States Army. A lifelong member of the Methodist faith, Gary was a former member of First United Methodist Church in Ottawa, and presently a member of Heritage United Methodist Church in Overland Park, Kansas. Gary served on the boards of the Kansas State High School Activities Association, and Kansas Association of Secondary School Principals. He was nominated for KASSP Principal of the Year while principal of Ottawa High School. He was inducted into the Ottawa High School “Wall of Honor” September 2007. On Friday, January 28, 1972, Gary was united in marriage with Rebecca Vinardi in Ottawa, Kansas. She survives of their home. Gary is survived by his: Wife-Rebecca Mavity of the home; Mother-Delma Mavity of Ottawa, Kansas; Daughter-Carrie McCool and her husband, Jeff, of Lenexa, Kansas; Son-Scott Mavity of Westwood, Kansas; Sister-Teri Howard and her husband, Dale, of Ottawa, Kansas Grandchildren-(3) Bob, Molly, and Finn McCool; Aunt-Charlene New; Aunt-Beverly Mavity and Uncle-Al Bari. Gary is preceded in death by his: Father-Charles W. Mavity, Jr. SERVICES: Cremation is planned. Memorial Services will be held at First United Methodist Church, 203 E. 4th St. in Ottawa at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, September 16, 2011, where family will meet with friends following the service.
