Edward Earl Payne

Edward E. Payne, 74, of Ottawa, Kansas, passed away Wednesday, October 19, 2022, at Rock Creek of Ottawa.

Funeral services will be held at 6:00 p.m., Monday, October 24, 2022, at Dengel & Son Mortuary, Ottawa, with military honors by the United States Navy.

Family will meet with friends immediately following the service.

Ed was born February 4, 1948, in Ottawa, the son of Cecil and Virginia (Hollon) Payne. He was a lifelong resident of Ottawa.

He graduated from Ottawa High School with the class of 1967. Ed enlisted in the United States Navy from January 1968 to January 1974 serving during Vietnam. On December 23, 1975, Edward was united in marriage to Betty Ledom in Garnett, Kansas. He was employed with Kalmar (Ottawa Truck) in all departments of assembly for 50 years, retiring in 2018.

Ed was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Memorial Post 5901 of Ottawa, and Aerie Lodge 2700, Fraternal Order of Eagles also of Ottawa.

Spending time with family and watching the grandchildren play was how Ed loved spending his time. He also enjoyed watching KU Basketball, KC Royals and KC Chiefs.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Cecil and Virginia Payne, sister Norma Jean Slemp, and brother Johnny Payne.

Survivors include three children, Deann Farrell (James Moore), Cheri Bishop (Larry), and Chad Payne (Tammy) all of Ottawa; four siblings, Delores Meiers of Ottawa, Rosemary Upton (Don) of St. Joseph, Missouri, Bill Payne of Neosho, Missouri, and George Payne (Lois) of Moran, Kansas; six grandchildren, Jeff Gragg (Bethany) of Ottawa, Ashley Gillaspie (Nathan) also of Ottawa, Justin Farrell of Pomona, Brandi Virtue and fiancé Scotty of Lawrence, Kevin Farrell and fiancé Jacha of San Diego, California, and Melani Gragg of Ottawa; and seven great grandchildren, Avery Gillaspie, Sevanna Gillaspie, Daelynn Virtue, Julia Gillaspie, Liam Virtue, Michael Farrell, and Joshua Farrell.
