Edith E. Chism

Edith E. Chism, age 99, of Ottawa, Kansas, died Sunday, October 24, 2010, at St. Francis Health Center in Topeka, Kansas. She was born on Tuesday, March 14, 1911, in Auxvasse, Missouri, the daughter of Ralph and Leona (Johnson) Eller. She moved to Ottawa from Auxvasse, Missouri in 1946. Edith graduated from Auxvasse High School with the class of 1929. She worked for the U.S. Postal Service in Missouri, was assistant manager for Woolworth’s in Ottawa, and bookkeeper for Ottawa Coop. From 1953 to 1982, she worked for ASCS (Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service) of Ottawa. She was a member of Auxvasse (Missouri) Baptist Church; North Baptist Church of Ottawa, where she served as Deaconess and Sunday School teacher; and was a volunteer at Ottawa Senior Center. On Saturday, January 28, 1933, Edith was united in marriage with Lindel Sherwood Chism in Mexico, Missouri. He preceded her in death on August 8, 1983. She is survived by her: Son-Vernon Ralph Chism and his wife, Donna, of Las Vegas, Nevada; Daughter-Linda Sible-LeMaster and her husband, Charles, of Ottawa, Kansas and Las Vegas, Nevada; Daughter-Kathryn Lee Chism-Loseke and her husband, Fred, of Topeka, Kansas; Eleven Grandchildren; Twenty Gt.Grandchildren and Four Gt.Gt.Grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her: Husband-Lindel Sherwood Chism; Father-Ralph Eller; Mother-Leona (Johnson) Eller; Daughter-Carol Sue East-West and Two Grandchildren. SERVICES: Graveside Funeral Services will be held at Highland Cemetery in Ottawa at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, October 28, 2010. IN STATE: Mrs. Chism will lie in state at the Dengel & Son Mortuary from 12:00 noon Wednesday to the service hour, where the family will meet with friends from 6:00 to 7:00 Wednesday evening.
