Dorothy J. “Dot” Detwiler, age 99, of Ottawa, Kansas, passed away Friday, September 2, 2022, at Rock Creek of Ottawa.
Funeral services will be held 10:00 A.M., Wednesday, September 7, 2022, at Dengel & Son Mortuary, Ottawa.
Family will meet with friends from 9:30 to 10:00 A.M., prior to service.
Interment at Baker Cemetery, Lane, Kansas.
Dot was born July 8, 1923, in Ottawa, Kansas. She was the daughter of Sam and Maude (De Vilbiss) Hume.
She was a graduate of Ottawa High School with the class of 1941 and attended two years at Ottawa University, where she received a teaching certificate and met her future husband, Bert.
On September 24, 1943, Dot was united in marriage with Bert Detwiler at Ottawa, Kansas. He preceded her in death on July 21, 1997. In November 2002 she was united in marriage with Byron Manchester. He preceded her in death in December 2007. She was also preceded in death by her parents, Sam and Maude Hume; siblings, Mildred Gibson and Joe Hume and infant son, Peter Berton Detwiler.
Dot worked twenty years as the high school secretary at Central Heights, USD #288. Prior to working at Central Heights, she was a music teacher at several county schools. She was a member of Union Chapel United Methodist Church, where she served as pianist until the age of ninety-five.
She loved playing the piano, painting, and playing Scrabble. Dot especially loved the color red and she enjoyed showing people her red fingernail polish, red lamp and anything red in her room. Spending time with her family, grandchildren and church family was very important to her.
Dot is survived by her children, Penny Carter and her husband Del of Balsam Lake, Wisconsin, Nancy Johnson of Ottawa, Liza Perry and her husband Milton of Princeton and Kit Detwiler of Lyndon; thirteen grandchildren; eleven great grandchildren and one great- great granddaughter.
The family suggests memorial contributions to Union Chapel United Methodist Church c/o Dengel & Son Mortuary, 235 S. Hickory, Ottawa, KS 66067.
