Donald W. Sims

Donald W. Sims, 73, of Ottawa, Kansas, passed away Monday, June 29, 2015, at Ottawa Retirement Village after a lengthy illness. Memorial services will be held at 6:00 p.m., Monday, July 6, 2015, at Dengel & Son Mortuary. Family will meet with friends following the memorial service. Inurnment Woodlawn Cemetery, Pomona, Kansas, will be held at a later date. Donald was born Tuesday, August 12, 1941, in Garden City, Kansas, the son of Paul and Betty (Thornton) Sims. He had lived in Ottawa since the late 1970’s moving from Topeka, Kansas. He graduated from Quenemo High School with the class of 1960. He attended Peru State University, Peru, Nebraska for three years, graduated from barber school in Topeka in the mid 1960’s, and attended Johnson County Community College. Donald was united in marriage with Marie (Johnson) McCann October 4, 1980, in Ottawa. She survives of the home. Other survivors include his mother, Betty Sims of Ottawa; two daughters, Diane Greenleaf-Kisner and husband Bob of Wichita, and Vicki Moore and husband Brian of Ottawa; brother, Gary Sims and wife Dealy of Williamsburg; four grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Teresa McCann; father, Paul Sims; and two brothers, Robert and Richard Sims. Donald worked as a barber in Topeka and Emporia for seventeen years during the 1960’s and 1970’s. In the late 1970’s he worked for Ottawa Truck in the parts department, retiring in 2009. Donald was a loving and devoted husband, father, son, brother, and grandfather whose greatest joy was spending time with his family. He was an outdoorsman who enjoyed golf, fishing, and smoking cigars. The family suggests memorial contributions to Southern Care Hospice c/o Dengel & Son Mortuary, 235 S.
