Donald Lee Lytle

Donald Lee “Don” Lytle, 75, Ottawa, passed away Friday, September 8, 2006. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M., Monday, September 11, 2006, at Dengel & Son Mortuary. Interment Lake View Cemetery, Erie, Kansas. Donald Lee “Don” Lytle was born on Friday, December 26, 1930, in Erie, Kansas, the son of Charles M. and Lula (Sheffer) Lytle. Don lived in Liberal, Parsons, and Emporia, prior to moving to Ottawa, in Franklin County, Kansas, in January of 1963, were he made his home until his death on Friday, September 8, 2006, at the age of seventy-five years. Don graduated from Parsons High School. From 1956 through 1990, he was a dedicated, highly respected Trooper with Kansas Highway Patrol, retiring as a Sgt. He began as a driver's license examiner, then an on-the-road Trooper. In 1955 and 1956, he was an Officer for the Police Department in Parsons. Don served in the United States Navy, during the Korean War, from December 29, 1950, to November 3, 1954, receiving medals and citations including Good Conduct Medal, Navy Occupation Service Medal (Asia), China Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Korean Service Medal (3 stars), United Nations Service Medal, and Korean Presidential Unit Citation. He was a member of First Christian Church in Ottawa; Ottawa Lodge #803, Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks; Ottawa Promenaders Square Dance Club; and Ottawa Lodge #18, A.F. & A.M. (Ancient Free & Accepted Masons). Don was a devoted family man, who greatly enjoyed all their family gatherings and had so much fun with their grandchildren. He loved the outdoors, hunting quail and birds, boating, and water skiing. He especially loved square dancing with Phyllis and, in his spare time, enjoyed watching John Wayne movies. On May 27, 1956, Don was united in marriage with Phyllis J. Hines in Erie, Kansas, who survives of their home. He is also survived by three sons and daughters-in-law, Alan and Carol Lytle of Olathe, Kansas, David and Laurian Lytle of Leawood, Kansas, Gary and Regina Lytle of Farmville, North Carolina; three grandchildren, Hannah, Joseph, and Julia Lytle, all of Leawood, Kansas; and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Lytle is preceded in death by his parents; grandson, Michael Craddock; sister, Velma Griffith; and two brothers, Harold Lytle, and William E. Lytle, an infant.
