Diane Sue Hunter died September 15, 2021 at her Brookdale Assisted Living apartment under Hospice care. Diane was born August 17, 1943 in Macon, Georgia, the daughter of Lottie Ellen (Armstrong) and Allen M. Hunter. Her father, Lt. Col. Allen M. Hunter, U.S. Army, served his country during W.W. II and the Korean War. Her parents divorced when Diane was ten years old, and Lottie Hunter then made her life for her two children in the small Kansas town of Hays, where she could trust neighbors to know and keep watch over all the children, an important consideration for a single working mother. They also lived in Syracuse and Garden City Kansas. Following graduation from high school Diane attended Fort Hayes Kansas State College. She was inducted as member of the Beta Beta Biological Honor Society Theta Eta chapter on November 5, 1963. She graduated with a Bachelor of Arts on May 24, 1965 and moved to Kansas City Missouri to train in the Medical Technology program at Saint Lukes Hospital. Interestingly enough she was the only student in her class. At that time, she was paid $100 a month and meals were provided. She passed the national registry the following year and was licensed as an MT(ASCP). On March 1, 1977 Diane received her Master of Science from Central Missouri State University in Warrensburg Missouri. Diane continued to work at Saint Lukes Hospital until her retirement on December 31,2010 after forty-five years of dedicated service. Diane had many interests through out her life. One of her greatest joys, besides her family and friends, was her love of her cats and her sports cars. She did excellent photography; loved to quilt; cross stitch and needlepoint. She was also quite a collector of Vera Bradley purses and Longerberg Baskets. She loved to travel and often visited her brother’s family over the years in California and Maui. With her bestie she attended most of the American Idol touring concerts over the years and attended Starlight theatre. She also enjoyed attending the New Dinner Theatre and had season tickets for Broadway Series at the Music Hall and Kauffman with Candy and Joyce Shropshire. She loved her church, Central United Methodist, and volunteered for many activities over the years. Back in the early 70’s she was a 3-4th grade Sunday school teacher. More recently she had volunteered as a receptionist in the office; delivered flowers; and read the liturgy at many services. She studied and went through the Stephen Ministry program and gave support to many in need. Diane always had a smile that continued to the end; she was a totally selfless and caring person to everyone. Diane was preceded in death by her parents and beloved brother Allen M. Hunter II. She is survived by her nephew, Allen Hunter III and sister-in-law Janet Hunter, both of San Diego, California; honorary nephew Christopher M. Macy, Merriam, Kansas and best friend and honorary sister, Candace E. Macy of Overland Park Kansas, cousins Richard (Donna) Austin, Pueblo, Colorado and Phyllis Ann Ferguson (Harry) of Fort Collins, Colorado; and of course, her beloved Ally cat of the home and cherished friends. She was loved by all and will be dearly missed. A memorial service celebrating her life will be held Saturday, October 2, 2021 at 10 a.m. at Central United Methodist Church at 5144 Oak Street, Kansas City, Missouri. The family will receive friends following the service in The Connect adjacent to the sanctuary. Graveside burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City Kansas. Memorials may be made to National Parkinson’s Foundation, Wayside Waifs.org, or Central United Methodist Church. The family wishes to thank the staff at Brookdale assisted living, Hospice and Home Instead who cared for her and all her friends who supported her over the years.
