Claude I. Turner, 95, of Yates Center, Kansas, passed away Saturday, November 16, 2019 at his home in Yates Center, Kansas. A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 A.M., Thursday, November 21, 2019, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, The Rosary will be held at 9:30 A.M., before the Mass. Interment at Highland Cemetery in Ottawa. Claude was born October 6, 1924 at Oneida, Kansas, the son of Raymond E. and Agatha Eva (Schulte) Turner. He lived in the Ottawa area until moving to Yates Center, Kansas in 2009. Claude attended Mudcreek Grade School and Ottawa High School, graduating in 1942. Claude was united in marriage with LaVeta L. Bates on February 14, 1953 at Homewood, Kansas. She preceded him in death on April 26, 2009. He was also preceded in death by his parents, Raymond and Agatha Turner; brothers, Orville Turner, Frank Turner, Roland Turner and Fred Turner; sisters, Mary McClure, Loyola Hutchinson, Ruth Carey, and Charlotte Simmons; and grandson, Chuck Leach. Survivors include three grandchildren, Donna Hibbard and husband Tom of Yates Center, Kansas, Dixie Collins and husband Rob of Piqua, Kansas and Heather Reed of Oklahoma; eight great-grandchildren, Ethan Leach and wife Savannah of Yates Center, Emily Kinzle and husband Kyle of Iola, Kendra Shaw and husband Derek of Yates Center, Clayton Smith and wife Teria of Independence, George Goodell of Iola, Jedd Frogatte of Humboldt, Nina Houk and husband Dalton of Moran, and Kirsten Hoyt of Ottawa; and eight great-great-grandchildren. Claude was employed with the Franklin County Road & Bridge department, retiring in 1989. Prior to Franklin County he worked in construction as a brick layer and from 1946 to 1948 with the railroad. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Ottawa, Teamsters’ Local #541 in Kansas City, Missouri and attended St. Joseph Catholic Church in Yates Center, Kansas. Claude loved spending time with family and playing with the grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He enjoyed gardening, fishing and playing cards. The family suggests memorial contributions to Sacred Heart Catholic Church or Hope House, both in Ottawa c/o Dengel & Son Mortuary, 235 S. Hickory in Ottawa, KS 66067.
