Charles Cleo Schoonover, 84, of Gardner, Kansas, passed away Saturday, February 4, 2023, at St. John Hospital, Leavenworth, Kansas.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M., Saturday, February 11, 2023, at Dengel & Son Mortuary, Ottawa. The family will meet friends from 5:00 to 7:00 P.M., Friday, February 10, 2023, at the mortuary.

Interment Highland Cemetery, Ottawa, Kansas.

Charles was born Thursday, August 18, 1938, in Pomona, Kansas, the son of Joseph W. and Letha M. (Ishmael) Schoonover.

He lived in Princeton, Kansas since 1972, moving there from Ottawa.

Charles was united in marriage to Norma S. Brown, October 13, 1957, in Ottawa. She proceeded him in death on November 11, 2000.

He was a farmer from the mid-1940’s to 1990. Charles was also employed as a bricklayer from 1962 to 2000 and owned and operated Schoonover Masonry for several years.

He was a member of the Bricklayers & Allied Craft Workers (BAC) local #15 of Kansas City, Missouri and a former member of the Williamsburg Wildlife Association. Charles was an avid hunter and fisherman. He enjoyed traveling with family and spending time with his grandchildren. His favorite place was Yellowstone National Park. He also enjoyed many cups of coffee with friends and family.

Charles was preceded in death by his parents; wife; son Charles Chester Schoonover; six brothers, Fred, Gordon, Shelby, Ralph, Rellis and Sterling Schoonover; six sisters, Leoda Bell, Frances Coxen, Joy Jones, Winona Berardini, Letha Warren, and Shirley Hughes.

Survivors include his daughter Cathryn Middleton (Jonathan) of Gardner, Kansas; six grandchildren, Amanda (Charlie), Melissa (Missy), Joseph, Caitlin (Travis), Ethan, and Nathan; and eight great-grandchildren Jeremy, Todd, Layla, Ian, Micheal, Isabelle, Riley and Darby.

The family suggests memorial contributions to the Heart of America Chapter Alzheimer Association, c/o Dengel & Son Mortuary, 235 S. Hickory, Ottawa, Kansas 66067.
